Down Under Tour 2004:
A Promotion Tour For The Wind

Motorized by nothing but the wind ... “Earthflyer” Dirk Gion
skates all over the Australian continent on his mountain-
board powered by his kites only. He follows an almost
3000 kilometer route through the Australian outback. The road
takes him from Adelaide on the southern coast of the country through
deserts and the prairie all the way to Darwin, the most northern town of
the continent. Solely by the power of the wind will he make up to 400 kilometers
a day speeding at 50 km/h. The equipment comprises kites of a size of 2 and 10
square meters, a special skateboard spanning over 130cm in length featuring two
high speed trucks, air tires and brakes.

Gion carries spare parts, water and food in a backpack and sleeps on the
roadside. Provisions will be renewed at publicly accessible gas stations
that pop up along Stuart highway roughly every 350 kilometers.
The extreme-skater will be accompanied by a TV crew, and
a photographer, who will document the tour, are not, however,
allowed to help or assist Gion in any way whatsoever.
Australian Spring is the most intensive season for winds
in the outback. The Earthflyer Tour will kick off mid
October of 2004 in southern Australia.
